A Monthly Reflection
At Outback Linen, Makers First. Planet Always. is more than a campaign. It’s a lens through which every decision is made, from how our linen is sourced, to who makes our garments, to how they’re worn and cared for over time.
This past month, we’ve shared more openly about what that commitment looks like in practice. Not as a checklist, and not as a claim of perfection, but as an ongoing responsibility to do better, thoughtfully and transparently.
This is our monthly reflection on what Makers First. Planet Always. truly means to us.
Putting People First
At the heart of Makers First is a simple belief: clothing should never come at the expense of the people who make it.
Our garments are created in partnership with ethical suppliers and manufacturers who uphold strict labour and environmental standards. This includes fair wages, safe working conditions, and a clear commitment to banning child labour and exploitation.
We are especially proud of our long-standing relationships with skilled artisans in India, where our embroidery is crafted by hand. These are not transactional arrangements, but ongoing partnerships built on respect, trust, and shared values. Skill takes time to learn, and time deserves to be honoured.
By choosing to work with the same makers year after year, we’re able to support consistency of employment and preserve traditional craftsmanship, something we believe is worth protecting.
Why We Manufacture Offshore
Ethical fashion is often spoken about in absolutes, but the reality is more nuanced.
We choose offshore manufacturing because it allows us to support rural women through meaningful, ongoing work, while also keeping our pieces accessible to a broader community. This balance matters to us. We believe that thoughtfully made clothing shouldn’t be reserved for a select few, and that affordability and ethics don’t have to exist in opposition.
Manufacturing offshore, when done responsibly, allows us to honour skilled labour, maintain fair pricing, and continue to grow a business that supports people both locally and globally.
Materials That Respect the Planet
Planet Always is about recognising that what we make — and what it’s made from — matters.
Our linen is sourced from ethical suppliers and is a natural, plant-based fibre. It’s biodegradable, breathable, and chosen for its longevity. All Outback Linen pieces are 100% cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, and made using organic, plant-based materials wherever possible.
These choices reflect our commitment to reducing harm and treading more lightly. Linen requires less water and fewer chemicals than many conventional fibres, making it a more considered option for both people and the planet.
We believe sustainability isn’t about chasing trends, but about choosing materials that last, physically and environmentally.
Slowing the Cycle
A recurring theme throughout this campaign has been the idea of buying less and choosing well.
Fast fashion encourages constant replacement. Makers First. Planet Always. asks something different: fewer pieces, made well, worn often, and kept for the long term. When clothing is designed to last and cared for properly, it reduces waste, lessens demand on resources, and supports a slower, more intentional way of living.
This approach benefits everyone, from the makers who aren’t pressured by unrealistic production timelines, to the customers who invest in pieces that serve them season after season.
Transparency Over Perfection
We don’t believe in presenting ethical fashion as flawless. There is always more to learn, more to improve, and more responsibility to carry.
What we do believe in is transparency — being honest about how our garments are made, why we make certain choices, and where we continue to grow. Makers First. Planet Always. is not a finished destination, but a commitment we return to, again and again.
Looking Ahead
As this month’s campaign comes to a close, the values behind it remain firmly in place.
Makers First. Planet Always. will continue to guide how we source materials, who we partner with, and how we design pieces meant to be lived in, not rushed through seasons.
Thank you for taking the time to read, reflect, and be part of a community that values people, craft, and care. We’re grateful to walk this path together.
